An Inquiry-Based Approach

Project Based Learning (PBL) prepares students for academic, personal, and career success, and readies young people to rise to the challenges of their lives and the world they will inherit.

Students work on a project over an extended period of time – from a week up to a semester – that engages them in solving a real-world problem or answering a complex question. They demonstrate their knowledge and skills by developing a public product or presentation for a real audience.

As a result, students develop deep content knowledge as well as critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills in the context of doing an authentic, meaningful project. Project Based Learning unleashes a contagious, creative energy among students and teachers.

At St Alipius students experience a personalised approach to learning that stems from development play and leads towards student-led and teacher-supported investigative and project-based approach learning focusing on the individual strength and affinities of the learner enabling a deep sense of inquiry and real-life learning experiences.

For those who are seeking a more formal definition: Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge.

Why?

An inquiry approach to learning enables student voice
and provides rich and real-life learning experiences.

Here are some examples from some of our students.
The 3/4 students explored the driving question, "Wonder, Awe and Act - Science vs Religion. How can Religion and Science, together, support our understanding of the world?"
Pepper chose to investigate how language influences our world. She explored the mechanics of language, along with the meaning and purpose behind language.

The 5/6 Learning Community completed Puberty Project's. They presented their ideas in a variety of ways. They creating a title for their project, identified the similarities and differences during puberty, labelled the reproductive systems with definitions and created a facts page. The discussion the students were able to have was about being independent and what that means in today's context. It was a respectful and positive chat, well done!

In the Foundation Learning Community, students learn through Discovery and a Play-based Approach to learning. Violeta pursued her interest in habitats that was sparked from a provocation related to our natural world.
2019 was the year of 'Performing Arts' at St Alipius. This area of learning was an integral component to all aspects of Learning & Teaching. At St Alipius we authentically integrate Religious Education and Catholic Social Teaching into our practice. This video is the Gospel Reflection and is an example of how the 'Performing Arts' is integrated into Whole School Prayer, along with the Victorian Curriculum General Capabilities within the area of Critical and Creative Thinking.

I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. John 10:10
