Mathematics at St. Alipius
Mathematics in Early Years: In the Early Years Centre students are encouraged to be active participants in their numeracy learning through hands on creative exploration and investigation. We provide structured, purposeful, authentic experiences that take into account student differences in readiness, interest and learning needs. We provide explicit teaching; targeting counting, place value, basic number facts, shape and measurement activities which also encompass vital social, emotional and life skills.
Mathematics in Middle Years: In the Middle Years students are building on their skills. Students are given opportunities to fully grasp concepts. They are exposed to a variety of tasks and meaningful activities in order to gain confidence as mathematicians. We place an emphasis on learning number skills so they can be applied to solve more complex maths tasks. Children are encouraged to take risks and share methods of coming up with solutions to problems
Mathematics in Upper Years: At this stage of our learning, we are working on fine tuning our skills so that we are able to adapt our learnt strategies to everyday events or problems. We are becoming independent learners. We complete open-ended mathematical projects that require a range of different skills and techniques. We run workshops on the skills that are required to complete each individual project. During these small group sessions we target skills that we will need for high school and for lifelong learning.
Check the school newsletter each week to Test Your Maths Skills.
These questions are taken from the 2013 Grade 3 & Grade 5 Naplan tests. We encourage families to have a go and see what answers you come up with.
